Weekly Literature Guideline Printout

I have created 2 different versions of our Weekly Literature Guides.  Making a lit guide for Bambi for every book was becoming a bit tedious and time consuming.  This creation is based on the ideas expressed in The Well Trained Mind 3rd edition as well as in our writing program  Excellence in Writing in the TWSS. (I do hope it was okay to use their materials in my guide.  I did note each of them in my footnote on each page)
I plan on using this guide for Bambi and Flower as their structured reading time, roughly an hour a day.  They of course will continue reading for pleasure other times of the day.  I will continue with Figuratively Speaking with my 5th grader, too!

I will most likely have Bambi choose her assigned reading books on a bit of an easier level (starting out) to use with this Weekly Lit Guide.  I would like to use some of the book suggestions for some fun activities on the LitWits Site!  She enjoys reading her historical fiction straight through without writing about it.  We will continue discussing what she has read using the helpful questions from SWB.

For Flower, Lightning Literature has pretty much been a breeze but she has been enjoying it.  She will use the Weekly Lit Guide as she reads her LL8 books.  She also enjoys reading her pleasure books uninterrupted and just having oral discussion with Mom.

Like I said, I made 2 versions.....they both have the same content but Version 1 is ideal to use in a 3 ring binder.  Version 2 is ideal to use in a spiral bound notebook.
Hope this can be helpful to your readers..... I look forward to seeing how helpful it is to my own readers as well as seeing how it strengthens their "deep thinking" reading skills and writing!

Island of the Blue Dolphins Book Guide

Bambi will be reading Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell for the next few weeks.  I will be making the book guide for her assigned reading.  I'm including literary terms as well and using Figuratively Speaking to help with that.  For those familiar with my Call of the Wild book guide, this guide will be similar to that.  For the first part of the Book Guide for the Island of the Blue Dolphins, you will see a "Character" page and an "Activities" page to use through the entire book.  I will be adding more pages for each chapter so keep checking back!!

You may enjoy watching about these cute sea otters on BBC Wildlife page.  This is added as a link for chapters 3-4.

The Penderwicks Book Guide

Bambi's next book will be The Penderwicks!  I'm so excited for her to read this book!  I thought I was going to make another book guide but I came across this novel study guide by Nat Reed for the book.  It looks awesome and will save me a ton of time for the next couple weeks.  We will still use Figuratively Speaking with it ..... I purchased this guide for $7.50 and it is 63 pages long.  I bought this on Teachers Pay Teachers.  Check out their samples....they look great!

Here is a link to a video of an interview with the author Jeanne Birdsall that wrote The Penderwicks.

Call of the Wild Book Guide

Bambi & I were on board with her reading ancient history readers while studying Ancients this year with SOTW....but so far, it hasn't worked out.  Most of them are just too hard for her.  She did finish The Egypt Game and seemed to enjoy that but I don't feel like she really got into it much.  She has been keeping a reading journal since the beginning of last year where she summarizes what she reads and jots down any key ideas, vocabulary, or just her opinions.
This year I've been trying so far to add in Figuratively Speaking....and we have done a couple lessons but it is just not getting done.  I wanted to incorporate it with her readers.  I have added this to the guide below.  Today we discussed personification.  I will use Figuratively Speaking with all the book guides I do....so we may touch on certain literary terms more than a couple times depending on our books.

So, we are starting fresh!  (I'm already tweaking this & that and we've only been in school for 1 month!)  We have come together and have chosen some readers that seemed pretty interesting to her......just a mix.  We haven't finished making her book list yet, but it will be a good mix and not entirely based on her history.

Our first book that she selected was The Call of the Wild by Jack London.  She looked through the original book but didn't think she could read it well.....so she pulled off the Classic Starts version of The Call of the Wild.  I feel this one is best suited for her reading style right now.  We will work harder this year on getting into more advanced books.  I feel this will naturally occur over time as she reads more & more!

I have made a Study/Activity Guide for the Call of the Wild that could be used with any version of the book.  She completed Chapter One today with it and loved it!  Thank goodness!  I'm sharing it here for you all to try it out!  Please let me know what you think!  I will be posting more tonight and throughout the week.....
