Essentials In Writing 4
Bambi has always loved telling tales and stories, but writing it down?....pffff! That's a whole other jar of beans! Since starting Essentials in Writing grade 4, she has blossomed! She actually doesn't whine or complain about starting a writing lesson. The videos are short and sweet (5-10 minutes maybe). Then she works on her worksheet or writing assignment. Though we do a separate grammar program, there is grammar with EIW. Bambi is nearly finished with this years writing course.....She had to complete a research project that took her step by step. She choose her favorite love, horses! I'm so proud of her hard work. She wanted to type her paragraphs which made it pop!
Science
Bambi and Thumper have enjoyed studying Earth Science lately and have learned a lot. It's been quite a bit of planning on my part because I choose not to purchase a science curriculum. We are working with the resources that we have and it's turning out to be a great science year with the two of them. I started out separating their Science, but it was just too much to flip flop back and forth. So they do it mostly together. Bambi will read harder selections and Thumper will join in with his own younger version book about whatever topic we are studying. I've posted some pictures of what they have been doing for science class. Thumper is always doing some sort of science and it would be nearly impossible for me to capture it all!
Julie (Bambi's American Girl doll) joined us for Science today!
What is soil? How do you make soil? What is in soil and how are they different? We compost, so this was nothing quite new for them, but it still gave them a chance to observe and make conclusions.
I've been trying hard to remind Bambi to show neat work and take pride in her work. She has been showing improvements in those areas lately and I'm proud of her!
Science is Thumper's favorite lesson! He has really beefed up his writing lately and has stretched out of his comfort zone at times! Love it!
We've been discussing how rocks can crack due to extreme change in temperatures. We took a glass marble and held it over a candle flame for a couple minutes. Then the kids immediately dropped it in an ice cold glass of water. There we watched it crack inside. Pretty cool experiment!
We have been learning about Earthquakes. We've watched videos from Netflix and Discovery Education .....We read about vibrations and seismic waves.....we are reading quite a bit about earthquakes. Everywhere we go lately they notice a book or movie about earthquakes and I watch their little wheels turn!

Bambi's Science
Bambi's Science
1st Week: Plant & Animal
Cells
2nd Week: Classify Leaves
Week 3:
Organisms in the past.....we mainly read books and watched
videos.
Week 4: How
Living & Non Living Things Interact
Monday we made a terrarium on living and
nonliving things. She and Thumper enjoyed this very much so!
Wednesday she read
about different Ecosytems in North America as well as the Water Ecosystems. She
also watched videos on Discovery Education!
Week
7
Week 8:
Photosynthesis Vs Respiration
Week 11-14:
Radial & Bilateral Symmetry, Invertebrates, & Vertebrates
For the rest of the year we will be studying Earth Science. Learning about rocks as been really fun so far......We are using the same text book along with this & this......
The Rock Cycle was
a cool activity! By the end of the lesson, Bambi was able to retell back in her
own words how the rock cycle follows through! Thumper did this along with her
and was easy enough for him to follow through.
Reading Journal
Reading Journal:
"The Corn Grows Ripe"
We begin our school year on August 6th!
Bambi will be keeping a Reading Journal, just a 5 Star notebook, to keep her
summaries of what she is reading, book report forms, literature skill focus
forms, crafts, and any other activities that she would like to log.
For the first two weeks she will be reading The Corn Grows Ripe and adding information each day after she reads. I will go over any discussion questions from our Sonlight Lit. Guide and at the end of the book we will do an activity. For this book, she loves to cook, we will be making Johnny Cakes! Yum!

1 cup cornmeal (white or yellow)
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup boiling water
½ cup milk
Directions:
1. Grease a non-stick skillet or griddle or frying pan with a little butter, margarine, oil, or non-stick spray. Do this even if you are using a “non-stick” surface to make the cakes easier to flip.
2. Put the frying surface on a medium heat setting or burner.
3. Mix the cornmeal and salt together.
4. Add water, a little at a time, stirring constantly until cornmeal is smooth. (It will remind you of the southern USA dish called grits except thicker.)
5. Add milk and stir again.
6. Drop spoonfuls of batter onto the hot frying surface just like you would for pancakes.
7. Cook like you would pancakes, flipping when the side against the griddle has browned.
8. When both sides have cooked, remove from the pan and keep warm until meal time.
You can eat these “cakes” with butter, jam, molasses, etc. They also are very useful when cleaning that last bit of food/gravy from your plate! Yum yum!
"Meet Kaya"
For each chapter
selections Bambi read, she wrote a summary of what she remembered. At the end
of the book, she filled out a book report sheet and added it to her Reading
Journal.

I have been picking
and choosing readers from Sonlight Core D and the library. If I use one of the
SL readers, I usually type up the questions from the study guides for Bambi and
paste them in her Reading Journal for her to answer them as she reads. I have
been adding in map work and vocabulary in those questions, too. This has been
helping with her writing in complete sentences and making her slow down while
she is reading! She seems to always be in a hurry with her school work.
American History
Again, I am reorganizing my blog....changing pages into posts so I can track them.
For our Read Aloud this week, I choose not to read Walk the World's Rim from Sonlight. Instead, I'm reading Crazy Horse & Favorite North American Indian Legends.
Making a Navajo Necklace! Dying her pasta...she wanted blue but it ended up green!
American History With Notebooking, Crafts, Timeline, and More......
We are using Sonlight History Readers, Read
Alouds, and student readers. We are adding different books, readers, and read
alouds that we like better. I've decided to not use the Landmark book from SL
Core D for Bambi because she just was not getting into it as planned. I am
using the Complete Book of United States History and DK Children's Encyclopedia
of American History. We read, make crafts using History Pockets, Notebooking
pages, timeline, and cook our way through American History. We have all the
Liberty's Kids Videos and get on Discovery Education frequently. We are just
making it up as we go and plan to learn a lot! I won't show all of the crafts,
notebooking pages, etc. because there is so much of it.....I will along the way
display some of her favorites though!
I found a map of North America and had Bambi show the different regions of Indian Tribes. She is now working on a comparison chart of each tribe describing their food, clothing, & shelter. She has done well! She will continue filling in her comparison chart as we learn about each tribe next week. I look forward to our crafts next week as I know she will, too!
